STAR-System , the new Datalogic RF Narrow Band Solution for Mobile applications
Bologna, 27th September 2001. STAR-System is the new Datalogic RF narrow band solution for mobile applications which includes all the RF system components: RF data collection devices, RF base station and software tools. In fact, the STAR-System provides the widest range of narrow band devices for data collection ever seen on the market.
The STAR-System addresses both industrial & residential environments and takes advantage of the distinctive characteristics of the various RF devices supported. These include pocket-sized pen shaped terminals and hand held readers as well as gun shaped and pistol grip devices, which together can read linear and PDF417 codes and offer instinctive, and distance reading.
The system has a seamless active roaming capability, and does not interfere with other RF devices using the same frequency, in conformance with the European ETSI standard EN300 220-3.
The STAR-System boasts a large number of benefits. It has a wide area coverage, and real-time connection with the user application. A large range of devices are able to solve various applications in different markets. Integration is easy in windows-based applications, and no operating license is required. Furthermore it is a reliable, fast and cost-effective system with minimal installation costs.
The performance of the new STAR-System is really impressive and data collection operations are faster than ever. It is based on a client-server architecture, where each operation is driven by the RF device (client). The new STAR-System solves, in a very professional and effective way, the most common applications such as data collection (e.g. bar code and quantity) and short data transfer (e.g. price, description, location, etc.).
The STAR-System links all RF devices and their own host applications, providing a real time fast, reliable and cost-effective wireless connection between the operators and most common databases or extensive ERP/WMS systems.
The new STAR-System consists of the following components:
STARGATE , the core component of the Datalogic STAR-System , is a narrow band radio base station that allows data transmission between several Datalogic RF devices and a host system (standard PC, Windows based) via a wireless network. Up to 16 base stations can be connected to a network.
A single STARGATE RF base station covers an area of about 8.000 m2 outdoors, manages up to 2.000 mobile devices and supports up to 255 simultaneous active clients in real time.
The new RF base stations are equipped with a seamless active roaming capability, permitting operators to move in total freedom while remaining connected to the host application.
STARGATE does not carry out continuous polling, but is enabled each time a RF device sends a sequence of data. This means the radio channel is kept free when RF devices are not transmitting, so that the STARGATE does not interfere with other RF equipment using the same frequency. STAR-System conforms with the European ETSI standard EN300 220-3.
STAR-Link is a professional software tool for programmers familiar both with "object programming" and Windows 95/98/2000/ME/NT environments. The component is an Automation COM object implementing a dual interface (it is possible to use it with Visual Programming Tools and Office applications) that manages, at a low level, the new Radio Frequency Network based on the new Datalogic CSMA/CA protocol.
With the STAR-Link software tool it is very easy to integrate data coming from the Datalogic STAR-System into an Excel spreads he et or an Access database; even easier for a programmer is the development of custom software to exchange data and messages in real time with Formula RF terminals or Datalogic Hand-Held Readers using Rapid Application Development languages such as Visual Basic, C builder, Delphi etc.
One of the most important terminals available in the STAR-System is the F734-E/RF. The enhanced Formula 734-E/RF is the new radio version of the successful F734, and is a lightweight, pocket-sized and fully programmable radio frequency terminal. It has 512KB of RAM memory for managing large databases and 512KB of Flash memory for application programmes of large dimensions. It solves the most complex application needs, exploiting the "overspeed" feature to boost software performance. Applications can be easily customised by using the Datalogic DS for Formula software package.
The STAR-System , the new Datalogic RF narrow band solution for mobile applications is particularly suited to warehousing, shop floor and POS In-Store applications.
